It has been said that time is money, that time is the one resource we cannot make more of. On the other hand, there is almost always a way to make more money with enough creative wrangling. For the vast majority of people in teaching and elsewhere, trading priceless time for a replaceable commodity like money is all too common.

Perhaps we make such a poor trade because we do not fully understand the value of what we are giving up.

Time is money, sure, but it is also so much more than that. It is intention, compounding returns, your first published book, your children's soccer game, a better lesson sequence, a calmer Sunday evening, and freedom. Time is what you need to live.

The real cost of teacher workload

Teachers are used to absorbing hidden costs. A worksheet takes an hour. A slidedeck takes a Saturday. A revision booklet takes three evenings. A unit plan gets rebuilt because the old file is not quite right, the formatting is inconsistent, or the examples no longer match the class in front of you.

None of those tasks feels enormous in isolation. The problem is accumulation. The true cost of teacher workload is not only the time spent planning. It is the attention lost before teaching, the recovery time lost after teaching, and the deep work that never begins because the day has been chopped into small pieces.

We cannot get anything meaningful done without having the time to do it. Furthermore, the value and impact of time scales in proportion to the amount of time we have. You can spend one day writing a lesson plan or one year writing a book, but think how much harder it would be to write that book over a year broken up by multiple periods of interruption. A year in full is vastly more valuable than 365 days split up.

Interrupted time is not the same as free time

This matters because teaching often steals time in fragments. Ten minutes answering an email. Twenty minutes fixing a slide. Half an hour searching for a better example. Forty-five minutes remaking a worksheet because the one you found almost works but not quite.

Those fragments do not simply add up mathematically. They also prevent the larger things from happening. Writing, tutoring, building a side project, learning a new tool, exercising, or spending proper time with family all require more than spare minutes. They require protected blocks of attention.

A strong resource does not just save time once. It creates a better starting point every time you teach the topic again. The first year, it saves planning time. The second year, it gives you a cleaner base to improve. The third year, it becomes part of a more coherent curriculum.

That is especially true in exam courses and specialist curricula.
