An IB Maths IA submission has a life of its own.

It begins as a possibility: a sport, a design problem, a pattern, a financial decision, a data set or a personal interest that might become mathematical. It then passes through a sequence of decisions, checks, calculations, drafts and conversations before it becomes a finished mathematical exploration.

Students sometimes imagine that the IA starts when they open a blank document and ends when they upload a final PDF. In practice, the most important work happens earlier and between drafts. A strong submission is developed through a process of narrowing, planning, testing, interpreting, evaluating and revising.

1. Topic Proposal

The IA's life begins with a topic proposal. This is not supposed to be a finished exploration. It is a short description of a possible context and the mathematics the student may use to investigate it.

A useful proposal answers a few practical questions:

What real context or personal interest will the student investigate?
What mathematical idea makes the context worth exploring?
What might the student measure, model, compare, optimize, estimate or evaluate?
What data, technology or sources could support the work?
What might make the investigation difficult?

At this stage, students should avoid trying to sound more sophisticated than their idea really is. “The mathematics of football” is too broad to guide a submission. “Modelling the path of a football using a quadratic function” is more promising, but it still needs a clear aim, suitable data and realistic assumptions.

The proposal is valuable because it makes the idea visible before the student invests too much time. A weak direction can be narrowed, redirected or replaced while the cost of changing course is still low.

2. Topic Approval

Topic approval is the first formal checkpoint. The teacher is not approving a completed IA. They are deciding whether the proposed context has enough potential to become an individual mathematical exploration.

A teacher may check whether:

the topic is specific enough to develop within the available word count and time;
the mathematics is appropriate for the student's course and level;
the student can access data or make reasonable measurements;
the context is safe, ethical and practical to investigate;
the student is likely to make their own decisions rather than reproduce a standard example.

Approval does not mean that every detail is settled. It means the student has a viable direction. The topic can still change as the student learns more about the data, the model or the mathematics.

Students should treat a teacher's questions at this stage as useful tests rather than obstacles. If a teacher asks, “What would count as a useful result?” or “What will you do if the data does not support that model?”, they are helping the student discover whether the idea has a workable future.

3. Aim Approval

Once the topic has been approved, the student turns it into a clear aim. The aim is the destination of the exploration: it tells the reader what the student intends to determine, compare, model, predict, optimize, estimate, test or evaluate.

A topic describes an area of interest. An aim describes the mathematical work the student will carry out.

For example:

Topic: basketball. Aim: determine how release height affects the optimal launch angle for a free throw using a quadratic projectile model.
Topic: personal finance. Aim: compare how different repayment schedules affect the total interest paid on a student loan model.
Topic: music. Aim: evaluate how accurately a sinusoidal model represents a recorded musical note.

Aim approval is an important checkpoint because it prevents the exploration from becoming a collection of unrelated calculations. If the aim is too broad, the student may gather data without knowing what to do with it. If it is too narrow, there may not be enough mathematics or reflection to sustain the work.

The approved aim should be precise enough to guide decisions, but flexible enough to allow the investigation to respond to evidence. A student may refine the wording later, but the central purpose should remain recognisable.

4. Plan

After the aim is approved, the student makes a plan. The plan is the bridge between an interesting idea and an executable investigation.

A practical IA plan identifies:

the variables and units;
the data source or measurement method;
the assumptions that will make the model manageable;
the mathematical techniques that may be relevant;
the technology that may be used;
the points where the model or method will be evaluated;
the likely limitations of the investigation.

The plan should not pretend that the student knows the final conclusion in advance. Its purpose is to establish a sensible first route. A good plan also includes a backup. If the original data cannot be collected, can a different sample be used? If the first model is poor, what alternative model could be compared?

Students should keep the plan, even after the exploration changes. Comparing the initial plan with the final submission can reveal where decisions changed and why. Those changes can become valuable evidence of reflection.

5. Source Collection

Source collection may involve original measurements, published data, images, research papers, websites, surveys, interviews or information from a school or community context. The source should support the aim rather than simply make the introduction look well researched.

Students should record source information as they work:

where the data came from;
when it was collected or accessed;
what the variables mean;
what units and sampling methods were used;
what limitations or possible biases may be present.

Data is not automatically reliable because it appears in a spreadsheet or on a reputable website. Students should ask whether the measurements are relevant, whether the sample is large enough, whether the units are consistent and whether the data actually permits the intended calculation.

Source collection is also where academic integrity begins. Record borrowed ideas, data, images and mathematical explanations before drafting. It is much easier to acknowledge a source properly when its details have been captured at the moment it is used.

6. Calculations and Mathematical Development

With a source and a plan in place, the exploration enters its mathematical development. This is where the student defines variables, establishes relationships, performs calculations and makes decisions about which mathematics belongs in the submission.

The objective is not to include the greatest possible number of techniques. The objective is to use relevant mathematics accurately and with understanding.

Each important calculation should have a purpose. The student should explain why a formula, method or transformation is being used, not simply present the output. Definitions and assumptions should appear before they are needed. Units should remain visible. Intermediate work should be included when it helps the reader follow the reasoning.

Technology can make this stage faster, but speed is not the same as explanation. A calculator, spreadsheet, graphing package or code can produce a regression, derivative, integral or simulation. The student still needs to explain what was entered, why the method was appropriate and what the result means.

7. Graphs and Models

Graphs and models give the mathematics a form that can be inspected. A graph can reveal a pattern, an outlier, a turning point or a mismatch between the data and a proposed model.

A useful graph should be:

labelled with meaningful variables and units;
scaled so that the important features can be seen;
introduced in the surrounding explanation;
interpreted rather than left as decoration;
connected to the aim and the next mathematical decision.

Students should avoid presenting a model as if it were automatically true. A fitted curve is an approximation based on data and assumptions. The exploration becomes stronger when the student asks where the model works, where it breaks down and what changing the model would do.

Comparing two models can be useful when the comparison has a purpose. For example, a linear model and an exponential model may be compared because the student's context does not make the correct relationship obvious. The student should explain the criteria used to compare them rather than choosing the model with the most attractive graph.

8. Interpretation

Interpretation is the stage where mathematical output becomes a statement about the context. Students should repeatedly ask: What does this number, graph, parameter or relationship mean here?

A calculation may show that a model has a particular maximum. Interpretation explains what that maximum represents, which conditions it assumes and whether it is realistic. A correlation coefficient may indicate a relationship. Interpretation considers its strength, the data range and whether other explanations are possible.

Interpretation should happen throughout the exploration, not only in the conclusion. After each substantial result, explain what it changes about the investigation. This gives the submission a sense of direction and makes the student's decisions visible.

9. Evaluation

Evaluation is the point where the student tests the quality and limits of the work. It is not a paragraph of generic statements such as “there could be human error.” It should be specific to the data, mathematics, assumptions and aim.

Useful evaluation may consider:

the accuracy and reliability of the data;
the effect of sample size or measurement error;
whether the assumptions are realistic;
how sensitive the result is to a change in an input;
where a model is valid and where it should not be used;
whether another method would produce a different conclusion;
what additional data would strengthen the investigation.

Evaluation should be connected to consequences. Instead of merely saying that the sample is small, explain how that might affect the confidence of the conclusion. Instead of saying that a model ignores air resistance, explain how that assumption could change the predicted trajectory.

10. Revision

The first complete draft is not the end of the IA's life. It is the point at which the student can finally see whether the topic, aim, mathematics and conclusion fit together.

Revision should happen at several levels:

Purpose: Does the exploration still fulfil its approved aim?
Mathematics: Are the methods correct, relevant and explained?
Structure: Does each section lead naturally to the next?
Communication: Are notation, units, graphs and definitions clear?
Reflection: Do the evaluation and conclusion respond to the evidence?
Ownership: Can the reader see the student's decisions and engagement?

Revision may lead to a change in the aim. That is not necessarily a failure. If the data reveals that the original aim is too broad or the initial model is unsuitable, refining the aim can make the final exploration more honest and coherent.

11. Feedback

Feedback should help the student improve the mathematics and communication while preserving the student's ownership. A teacher can identify an unclear definition, challenge an unsupported assumption, ask what a graph means or point out that the conclusion has not returned to the aim.

Students should learn to turn feedback into actions. “Improve reflection” is not yet a revision plan. A more useful response is: “After each main result, I will explain its meaning in context and connect it to the next decision.”

Feedback is most useful when it arrives while there is still time to act on it. Students should therefore bring specific sections or decisions to a teacher rather than waiting until the entire submission is finished. They should also keep a record of feedback and the changes made in response.

Good feedback does not replace the student's thinking. It makes the student think more precisely.

12. Final Approval

Final approval is the last checkpoint before submission. The teacher or school checks that the work is complete, coherent, appropriately acknowledged and ready to be submitted through the required process.

A final approval checklist may ask:

Is the approved aim stated clearly and addressed in the conclusion?
Are the variables, data, assumptions and sources explained?
Can the reader follow the mathematical development?
Are graphs, tables and diagrams labelled and interpreted?
Has technology output been explained rather than copied?
Does the evaluation discuss specific limitations and consequences?
Is the student's own decision-making visible?
Have sources, borrowed ideas and images been acknowledged?
Does the file meet the school's submission and formatting requirements?

Final approval is not the same as a guarantee of a particular mark. It confirms that the submission has passed the school's process and is ready for the next stage. The student remains responsible for the work and should be able to explain the mathematics and decisions in it.

The IA Is a Process, Not a Single Event

The life of an IA is a sequence of connected decisions:

Topic proposal → topic approval → aim approval → plan → source collection → calculations → graphs and models → interpretation → evaluation → revision → feedback → final approval.

Each stage protects the next one. A clear topic makes aim approval easier. A precise aim makes planning more useful. Good source collection makes the calculations more credible. Careful interpretation makes evaluation specific. Revision and feedback help the final submission communicate what the student actually discovered.

Students should not wait for the final draft to begin reflecting. Teachers should not treat approval as a single yes-or-no decision at the beginning. The strongest process gives the student ownership while creating regular opportunities to test whether the exploration is still focused, mathematical, coherent and their own.

That is the real life of an IB Maths IA: an idea becoming an investigation, an investigation becoming an argument, and an argument becoming a finished piece of mathematical work.
