It’s hard to overstate the impact that a quality teacher has on just about every metric an international school might be concerned with.

It can hardly be overstated, for example, that expert and veteran math teachers significantly improve classroom learning outcomes, and therefore fulfill the general mission of their school to improve their students’ ability to reason, think critically, and learn. Yang and Kaiser (2022) argue that the reason expert and veteran teachers are so effective is that they have been adept at noticing what is important in the classroom, as well as communicating their expectations and understanding in a way that students can understand. In a review of more than fifty studies empirically measuring teacher performance across a number of cultural contexts, Yang and Kaiser argue that “[t]eacher quality is a critical factor that influences instructional quality and student learning outcomes”, and go on to outline the need for a richer model in describing how even mathematics teachers have an impact on students’ affective (emotional) development. The implications of this line of thinking are enormous: if a circuit between healthy affective development and “mathematics achievement” exists, then quality math teachers should be recognized not only in terms of their content knowledge or even their pedagogy but also in their ability to elicit the right affective environment* for their students. Indeed, the right affective environment helps students think better and therefore helps them learn more.
