IB MYP Year 3 is a key transition point in mathematics. Students begin working with more formal algebraic relationships, linear models, accuracy, geometry, statistics, probability and mathematical inquiry. The slides are intentionally simple. Rather than placing several definitions, methods, diagrams and questions on a single screen, each slide usually communicates one thought in one sentence.

That design choice matters. A student learning how to solve a simultaneous equation does not need to process a whole page of instructions at once. They need the next useful step. A concise slide can state the action, show the mathematics and give the teacher space to ask questions before moving on.

A sequence on solving equations might build as follows:

Expand the brackets first.
Collect the terms containing the variable.
Move the constant term to the other side.
Divide both sides by the coefficient.
Check the solution in the original equation.

Each step is visible, manageable and easy to revisit. Teachers can pause for discussion, ask students to predict the next move or add a second example where a class needs more time. The same approach works across accuracy, linear functions, geometry and statistics. The goal is to make the structure of the thinking visible.

Step-by-step methods that show how problems are solved

Red problem slides are supported by step-by-step worked methods. Students can see not only the answer, but the reasoning that produces it. A worked solution can show the information given, the method chosen, each calculation in a clear order, the reason for each step, the final answer in context and a check for accuracy or reasonableness.

For a Pythagoras problem, students first identify the right-angled triangle and select the correct sides. The next steps show substitution, calculation, appropriate rounding and a final statement with units. In a statistics lesson, students can calculate a correlation coefficient, interpret the direction and strength of a relationship, then explain why correlation alone does not prove causation.

The steps make the method teachable, but they do not make students passive. Once students have a model, they can compare methods, identify errors, decide whether a solution is reasonable and explain why another approach may or may not work.

Inquiry connected to the mathematics students have learned

Green inquiry slides ask students to use mathematics for a purpose. In a linear-functions unit, students might compare two mobile-phone plans, model each relationship, identify when one plan becomes better value and explain their conclusion. In a statistics lesson, they may investigate whether a scatter graph supports a claim, identify an outlier and discuss whether the data is sufficient.

In probability, students can create a game, calculate its possible outcomes, test it through simulation and decide whether it is fair. These tasks move students beyond “Can I do the calculation?” towards more useful questions: What does the answer mean? Which representation is most useful? What assumptions am I making? Is this conclusion justified?

Exit tickets provide evidence before the next lesson

Purple exit tickets close the lesson with a short, focused check. A Year 3 exit ticket might ask students to solve an equation, identify an error in a worked solution, explain what a gradient means in context or state whether a conclusion from a scatter graph is justified.

Strong exit tickets often include a short calculation, a conceptual question and a one-sentence explanation or reflection. That final explanation helps teachers distinguish a correct answer from secure understanding and decide whether the next lesson should extend, revisit or reteach part of the idea.

Slides, notes and worksheets working together

The slides are designed as part of a complete lesson rather than a standalone presentation. Teachers can use the slides to introduce the concept and guide discussion.
