An IB Maths AI course becomes much easier to teach when the whole two-year journey is visible. Individual lessons still matter, but teachers also need to see what students have already met, what they are about to need, where technology and modelling are developed, and when there is enough time for assessment, review and the internal assessment.

The IB Maths AI Curriculum Map is a free, editable planning workbook for that purpose. It is a recommended teaching sequence, not an official IB timetable. Schools should adapt it to their calendar, students' prior learning, lesson allocation and local assessment requirements.

What the curriculum map does

The workbook turns a large two-year course into connected planning views. It starts with the overall time available, then helps a department move from unit allocation to weekly teaching, assessment and resources. Rather than treating the syllabus as a checklist, it makes the dependencies between topics visible.

That matters especially in Applications and Interpretation. Algebra, functions, statistics, probability, geometry, calculus, technology and interpretation should not appear as isolated blocks. Students need repeated opportunities to choose tools, build and evaluate models, communicate a conclusion and decide whether an answer makes sense in context.

How to use each sheet

Dashboard: begin with real teaching time

Start on the Dashboard. Set the number of school days and instructional weeks that your calendar can realistically support. The summary gives the department a shared view of total instructional time, planned course time and completion progress. It also uses colour and status tracking so that colleagues can see which parts of the plan are not started, in progress, completed or adjusted.

This is the most useful place to make local changes. Put holidays, examinations, reporting periods, school events and expected disruptions into the plan before assigning new content. A map that assumes every lesson will happen cannot help a teacher make good decisions when the calendar changes.

Unit Allocation: protect the course balance

The Unit Allocation sheet gives a high-level distribution of the course across the five syllabus areas: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. It records the IB codes, planned weeks and days, the level focus and a suggested assessment pattern.

Use this view to check the balance before refining a week-by-week plan. A department can move a unit when it better suits local circumstances, but should identify the prerequisites that move with it. For example, students need confidence with algebraic representation and graphical relationships before they can make productive use of later functions and modelling work.

Year 1 and Year 2 Pacing: turn the overview into lessons

The two pacing sheets are the working centre of the map. Each row records the year, week, instructional days, level focus, IB syllabus codes, topic focus, a daily or five-day sequence, assessment and deliverables, and any IA, EE or toolkit connection.

Use the sequence as a starting point rather than a script. A typical week can introduce an idea, model a method with technology, provide purposeful practice, ask students to interpret or critique a result, and finish with a short formative check. If that check exposes a misconception, adjust the next row. The map is most valuable when it records the adjustment instead of hiding it.

Assessment Calendar: make evidence routine

The Assessment Calendar places tests, investigations, reviews and other assessment events alongside the teaching sequence. This prevents a common planning problem: completing content only to discover that there is no protected time to retrieve earlier learning, give feedback or reassess an important skill.

Spread assessment evidence across the course. Include short formative checks, cumulative review, modelling tasks and opportunities for students to explain choices made with technology. In AI, an accurate calculation is only part of the evidence; students should also be able to interpret the result and comment on the assumptions or limitations of a model.

IA & EE Tracker: plan independent work early

The IA & EE Tracker gives milestones a place in the same document as the teaching plan. Use it to establish when students will explore a possible question, work with data, consider assumptions, produce a draft and act on feedback. Early small-scale modelling and investigation tasks make these later milestones more manageable.

The tracker should not turn an IA into a formulaic lesson sequence. Its role is to protect time, make supervision checkpoints visible and ensure that students have developed the relevant mathematical and communication skills before a major deadline arrives.

A practical way to adapt the map

Set the calendar first. Enter the teaching weeks you actually have and protect key school dates.
Review the unit order. Keep prerequisites visible, then adjust the sequence to your students and local context.
Plan assessment before the term begins. Reserve time for feedback, retrieval and mixed practice as well as end-of-topic tasks.
Link resources to the precise week or code. This lets a teacher move from the map to the lesson materials without searching through separate folders.
Review it together. Add status updates and notes as the year progresses so the next teacher benefits from the department's evidence.

Keep the map flexible, but make the connections deliberate

A curriculum map is not successful because every row is completed exactly as first written. It is successful when it helps teachers make informed changes without losing the course's coherence. When a topic takes longer, when students need more algebra retrieval or when a rich data investigation opens an unexpected opportunity, the map helps a department see what needs to move and what should remain protected.

Use the workbook as a living plan: adapt the pace, retain the connections between topics, and return to it whenever assessment evidence suggests a better route through the course.
