For years, the standard approach to teaching IB Mathematics has looked something like this:

You feel lucky if you can finish even a single unit fully by the time the school year starts.

Oxford, Pearson and other established IB publishers can provide excellent reference material and large collections of questions. But there is an important difference between a textbook designed to contain a course and a teaching resource designed to deliver one.

And that estimate does not include the hours teachers sometimes spend searching online for one perfect graph, activity, exam-style problem or calculator tutorial. It also does not include the time required to adapt the same material for multiple classes or to rebuild a unit when a digital file is no longer available.

The 5.5-hour total is deliberately conservative. The 10+ hours in the headline describes the broader weekly workflow when searching, unit coordination, repeated class adaptations and assessment rework are included. Not every teacher will recover exactly the same amount every week, but the underlying point is consistent: disconnected resources create production work that ready-to-teach materials can reduce.

A Slidedeck Is Not Just a Textbook on a Screen

There is another important distinction.

Making a textbook digital does not necessarily make it a teaching presentation.

Pearson's IB Diploma Mathematics catalog, for example, describes its materials as available in print and digital formats and as supporting the 2019 IB Diploma Maths guide. That can be extremely useful for reference and student study.

But an eBook and a classroom slidedeck serve different purposes.

A well-designed teaching presentation controls the sequence of information.

Instead of giving students an entire page containing a definition, worked example, graph and ten exercises, the teacher can reveal those elements gradually. That sequencing reduces the amount of information students must process at once and gives the teacher greater control over pacing.

Digital Resources Matter Even More When the IB Syllabus Changes

This becomes particularly important as IB Mathematics approaches its next curriculum transition.

The IB has announced updated Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation courses for first teaching in August 2027, with first assessment in May 2029.

For Analysis and Approaches, the IB says the revision includes targeted content reductions. At SL, financial applications and bivariate data are being removed. The assessment model is also being adjusted, including a reduction in the total marks on Papers 1 and 2 from 80 to 75 marks each. Internal assessment criteria are also changing.

Meanwhile, Pearson's current Analysis and Approaches textbook is still described as supporting the 2019 guide.

Much of the mathematics remains relevant. But it illustrates one of the structural advantages of a digitally maintained teaching system: individual lessons, assessments and course sequences can be revised without waiting for an entirely new physical edition of a book.

For schools planning several years ahead, that flexibility matters.

The Real Cost of a Resource Is Teacher Time

Schools naturally compare the purchase price of educational resources.

But the sticker price is only one part of the calculation.

Suppose a teacher spends five additional hours each week creating slides, finding problems, formatting worksheets and building assessments. Across a 36-week school year, that represents:

5 hours × 36 weeks = 180 hours

That is more than four full 40-hour work weeks spent producing materials.

And in a department with three IB Mathematics teachers, duplicated preparation can multiply that cost.

This is why the question schools should ask is not simply:

“How much does this resource cost?”

A better question is:

“How many hours of teacher preparation will this resource remove?”
